Therefore, it is time to rank these teams to see where they fall as the playoff race heats up.

32.New York Jets (1-7)

While their only win was against a top ten team, that was a top ten team with numerous injuries. Despite that, it’s a game the Jets had no business winning, especially based off of how they’ve played this season. Sam Darnold has shown flashes at QB, but a lack of weapons in his offense is holding him back. The Jets need to be prepared to agressively pursue recievers in free agency or draft Jerry Jeudy early in the first round. Either way, the safe bet is for the Jets to tank the remainder of the year. This team is a disaster.

31.Cincinnati Bengals (0-8)

The Bengals are the only winless team in the NFL, but with AJ Green expected to play for the first time this season in Sunday’s matchup against the Ravens, things can only get better from here. The quarterback situation, however, is very rocky, as Ryan Finley will make his first start on Sunday. If that experiment doesn’t work out, the Bengals will need to find a better option at quarterback, such as drafting Tua Tagovailoa or Joe Burrow. Either way, things can only go up for this winless squad.

30.Miami Dolphins (1-7)

The Dolphins have looked better in their past two games, as they were contending late into the game at Pittsburgh, and finally earned their first win of the season against the dismal New York Jets on Sunday. This is a team building for the future based on their trades, as they will have three first round picks to bolster a lineup that is already relatively young. This season was a lost cause for this team from the beginning, but this kind of season was unexpected. Don;t expect this team to do much in the final eight games, but they should be better than they were in the first 8.

29.Washington Redskins (1-8)

This team has shown flashes, playing close games against the undefeated 49ers and the Philadelphia Eagles, but this team has been very inconsistent with it’s play. However, there is one consistency, and that is losing football games. The quarterback situation is horrendous, they have an interim head coach, and they are now dealing with drama surrounding Trent Williams health scare, as he had a lump on his head that the Redskins medical staff supposedly told him was no big deal, but it ended up being cancerous, and he’s holding out, probably until he is on another team. This team has more problems than we can count, and more than just the draft and free agency will fix them.

28.Atlanta Falcons (1-7)

This team has confused me all year. With all of the talent on this roster, how are they only 1-7? It all traces back to head coach Dan Quinn, who probably has the hottest seat in all of football at this point. A win over the Philadelphia Eagles in week 2 was promising for this squad, but it hasn’t translated to any other success. This team has loads of talent among the offense, while the defense is thin on it. However, the biggest problem is coaching.

27.Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2-6)

Fantasy football owners have loved the trio of Godwin, Evans, and Winston for their teams, but this team is a nightmare defensively and has an inability to win games depite putting up massive numbers. Shaquil Barrett has been the only bright spot on this defense, as he leads the NFL in sacks with 10.5, but the rest of the defense has been dismal. If they can aquire some defensive assets, this team could be dangerous come next season.

26.New York Giants (2-7)

It’s a double dose of awful for the Big Apple, as the Giants continually fail to execute. This team often plays their opponents close, but falters late in games. Daniel Jones has shown huge flashes of greatness, but, he’s lost a league high 8 fumbles, something he’ll have to work on. This team is better than their record demonstrates until late in games, and that’s why they’re 2-7 and ranked this low in my power rankings.

25.Cleveland Browns (2-6)

The Cleveland Browns are mediocre once again, but it was unexpected this season. The wealth of talent on this roster is substantial, as is the lack of team chemistry. If these guys functioned as a group, they would be a top 10 team. With the big egos of Odell Beckham Jr., Jarvis Landry, and Baker Mayfield on the same roster, don’t expect it to improve anytime soon. A change at head coach may be the first step into achieving this.

24.Denver Broncos (3-6)

When Phillip Lindsay plays well, the team usually plays well. This doesn’t happen consistently enough, however, and has become a major problem. If Lindsay developed some consistency, this team could win more games. The biggest problem, though, is at the quarterback position, as Joe Flacco is done for the year, and Brandon Allen has only played one game, against another inconsistent team, the Cleveland Browns. Another piece of the equation is rookie QB Drew Lock, who could be starting at any time now. There are a lot of inconsistencies and unknowns on this team, and these will hold the team back until they are corrected.

23.Chicago Bears (3-5)

It is time for a new quarterback, already. Mitchell Trubisky, the second overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft, has been horrendous the whole season, as he only has a QB rating of 80.0. While the lack of weapons at reciever can be blamed, Trubisky has still been terrible, and finding another QB will be the first step in revamping this Chicago offense. If Trubisky can have a huge turnaround, the Bears have an elite defense that can help get the job done, and this team will be able to win games. Until then, a new QB will be a must-have for the Bears.

22.Tennessee Titans (4-5)

The future at the quarterback position is unknown at this point, and a lack of weapons doesn’t help at all. Derrick Henry and Delanie Walker are about the only dangerous players on this offense, so they have a huge need at wide reciever. Fortuantely, they have promising young recievers in Corey Davis and AJ Brown, so it may just be a matter of time before this offense is dangerous. While this team is capable of success right now, the future is certainly what looks best for this team at this point.

21.Los Angeles Chargers (4-5)

The Los Angeles Chargers continued their inconsistent play with a 26-11 upset of the Green Bay Packers on Sunday to improve to 4-5, but this team still has evident problems that need to be addressed. Phillip Rivers has always been inconsistent, and with him apptroaching the end of his career, the Chargers need to be prepared to draft a QB in the 2020 NFL Draft, whether an early round or late round pick. While Rivers’ inconsistency has been the biggest problem, the lack of talent on the O-line is also a huge problem that would make it hard for any QB to perform well. If the Chargers had a serviceable, Rivers consistency may improve, or not. Either way, it’s a huge need for this team.

20.Arizona Cardinals (3-5-1)

Kyler Murray has starred for a pretty thin team, as he has over 2,000 yards passing and only 4 interceptions as a rookie quarterback. Christian Kirk has flourished into a top 30 wide reciever, and Larry Fitzgerald has returned to his elite form. This team still has a fighters chance at a wildcard if things go right, but it’s certainly a major improvement over last season for sure. This is a team with many young assets that looks to contend in the NFC in a couple of years, and maintain that competitiveness for years down the road once they get there.

19.Detroit Lions (3-4-1)

Matthew Stafford is having a fantastic year, but the loss of Kerryon Johnson has significantly weakened an already weak ground game in Detroit, thus making passing the only option. Lacking a solid defense, this team is in major trouble if their pass game is shut down. That is not very likely though, when Kenny Golladay, Marvin Jones, and Danny Amendola can all make high level plays. This team can hope for 8-8, but the playoffs aren’t quite in the cards this year.

18.Pittsburgh Steelers (4-4)

Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges have both shown flashes at QB, but the defense is what has carried this team. Led by TJ Watt, Devin Bush, and Minkah Fitzpatrick, this young defense should be dangerous down the road if this core stays intact. Combine that with increased experience for Rudolph and drafting more receivers, this could be a dangerous team in a few years. Right now, it’s about getting these young players experience to build on.

17.Oakland Raiders (4-4)

Josh Jacobs and Darren Waller have been huge playmakers all season, and Hunter Renfrow is emerging as another one, as he has 142 yards receiving and two touchdowns in the last two games. Jacobs is 7th in the NFL in rushing, and Waller has been the unexpected #1 receiver for Derek Carr at the tight end position. If the rise of Renfrow and the solid performace by Waller and Jacobs continues, the Raiders should have a solid chance at a wildcard spot in the playoffs.

16.Jacksonville Jaguars (4-5)

Gardner Minshew II has looked stout in his eight game stint as the starting QB, but it hasn’t been quite good enough to this point, as Nick Foles will be the starter in week 11 after a week 10 bye. Leonard Fournette is a favorite for the comeback player of the year, as he has become one of the top running backs in the NFL, and downfield threats in Dede Westbrook and DJ Chark make this team dangerous when they get hot. This is a young team that is building to be a future dynasty, but they can still succeed right now.

15.Los Angeles Rams (5-3)

Todd Gurley has been mediocre this season behind a, well, mediocre offensive line, and Jared Goff has been the same on a relatively mediocre team across the board, except for the wide receiver position. When Brandin Cooks returns, this offense will be bolstered somewhat, but he has also been disapointing this season. The Rams offensive line from last season was very underrated, and after losing John Sullivan and Roger Saffold, who were two major pieces of that line, the offense has struggled. Combine that with a mediocre linebacker group and a thin secondary, and you can see why this team is not meeting expectations.

14.Carolina Panthers (5-3)

The Panthers are 5-3, including 5-1 in their last 6 games with Kyle Allen as the starting QB, but 4 of those wins have been against teams with a losing record, with the one exception being the 6-3 Houston Texans. Christian McCaffrey is having an MVP level season, as his numbers are comparable to LaDanian Tomlinson’s after 8 games in 2006, when he won the MVP. If McCaffrey can continue to produce at this level as the Panthers. Their 1-2 record against teams with a winning record, including a 51-13 blowout loss to the San Francisco 49ers, has me concerned about just how good this team is as they enter the toughest stretch of the schedule. Their matchup against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday will be a huge indicator of just how good they are.

13.Philadelphia Eagles (5-4)

The Eagles have won 2 games in a row since being embarrassed by the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. Zach Ertz finally looked like his old self against the Chicago Bears in week 9, and a win over Buffalo in week 8 has this team trending upwards. Combine that with a win over the Packers, and you can see the talent in this team. However, their flaws have been showcased far too many times, and this team will need to find consistency to make the playoffs. If they can continue looking the way they have the past two weeks, this could be a dangerous team come playoff time.

12.Indianapolis Colts (5-3)

Andrew Luck’s retirement shocked the whole sports world, as it came only a couple of weeks before the start of the season. Many thought this team was doomed, but Jacoby Brissett has proven otherwise, as he has this team at a 5-3 record as he is playing at an elite level behind the elite Colts offensive line led by Quenton Nelson and Ryan Kelly. While the Brissett injury is a concern, it should only be temporary, and Frank Reich is a good enough coach to effectively adjust for another QB. This team is certainly overachieving, and I expect it to continue all the way to the postseason.

11.Houston Texans (6-3)

Deshaun Watson has looked like the dangerous QB we all knew he had the potential of this season, as he is a frontrunner for the MVP, boasting a QB rating of 107.1, third highest of all starting QB’s. His one-eyed pass to seal the win over the Oakland Raiders in week 8 is still fresh on our minds, and I only expect him to continue making these kinds of plays. Once Will Fuller V is back, this offense will be a juggernaut. However, the biggest question is a JJ Watt-less defense, as he is out for the year. Only time will tell if this team can contend for a title without Watt.

10.Buffalo Bills (6-2)

The Bills looked like a dangerous team until their last two games, as they nearly lost to the Miami Dolphins and were blown out by the Philadelphia Eagles at home in week 8. This is a team without major injuries, so the recent downwards spiral is a mystery to everyone. However, they had a bye in week 9, so these issues may have been corrected by virtue of that. If they have been, Josh Allen should be able to continue playing at an elite level and the defense should do the same. If this team continues the slump, however, they will lose all hope of winning the AFC East, and potentially just making the playoffs. I’ll bet on the first one, but only time will tell. This may be the most interesting team to watch in week 10, when they will face the Cleveland Browns, who are wildly inconsistent.

9.Dallas Cowboys (5-3)

This team has returned to form over the past two games with a blowout of the Philadelphia Eagles and a dominant second half over the New York Giants. What was still evident, though, was the early game slumps they have become synonomous for, as they scored 34 of their 37 points in the final 30:52 against the Giants, including outscoring them 24-6 in the second half. Combining that with a three game losing streak, this team has demonstrated flaws. However, they should be as dangerous as anyone offensively as long as Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, Zeke Elliott, and the three pro bowl offensive linemen are healthy. When those guys are inactive, however, the Cowboys have shut down, so that will be something to monitor. As long as things go as planned, this is a team capable of winning the whole thing.

8.Minnesota Vikings (6-3)

Dalvin Cook has been seemingly unstoppable all season, and the Vikings will continue to need that, especially while Adam Thielen is inactive, as he is expected to be out for their week 9 matchup against the 5-3 Cowboys. This team will have arguably the most dangerous offense in the NFL once Thielen is healthy, and they also have a very stout defense consisting of arguably the best safety in the NFL, Harrison Smith, and a stacked defensive line. The biggest variable for this team, though, is Kirk Cousins. If he plays as well as he has recently, they are among the top championship contenders. If he plays as he did early in the season, however, this team won’t go far in the postseason. Their week 9 matchup should set the tone for the remainder of the season, as they will face the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football.

7.Kansas City Chiefs (6-3)

The Chiefs managed surprisingly well without Pat Mahomes, as they went 2-1 in his three game absence, with the only loss being in a close matchup with the 7-2 Green Bay Packers. With Mahomes expected to be active in their week 10 matchup against the Titans, this team should only perform better from here. The trio of Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, and Travis Kelce is unstoppable when they get it going. With only one game remaining against a team that currently has a winning record, that trio should be lethal the rest of the season as long as they stay healthy. This team, as evidenced last season, is dangerously good when they are in their zone.

6.Seattle Seahawks (7-2)

Russell Wilson looks to be running away with his first MVP award up to this point, as his QB rating is unbelievably good, at 118.2, a league high. He has also made plays on his feet, however, as he has ran for over 200 yards and 3 touchdowns in addition to 2,505 yards and 22 touchdowns passing the football. The acquisition of Josh Gordon after being released by the Patriots makes Wilson all that more dangerous, as he has another weapon in addition to Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf. With a huge matchup against the undefeated San Francisco 49ers looming in week 10, we’ll get to see just how good this team really is.

5.Green Bay Packers (7-2)

Aaron Rodgers is having one of the best seasons of his career, and another Aaron has emerged as a superstar this season. Running back Aaron Jones has been sensational this season, as he has 850 yards from scrimmage and 11 total touchdowns, including a monster 4 TD game against the Dallas Cowboys in week 5. Oh, and by the way, this team was undefeated without star reciever Davante Adams. This team is as good as any in the NFL, and looks to have a very good chance of making a deep run into the postseason.

4.Baltimore Ravens (6-2)

A win over the New England Patriots in week 9 showed the NFL world that this team and quarterback Lamar Jackson are for real. Jackson is the only player who might have an argument against Russell Wilson for MVP, as he has 1,813 yards passing and 637 yards rushing, and has accounted for 17 touchdowns. He has kept teams guessing with his style of play, and is nearly unstoppable due to his versatility, similar to LeBron James in the NBA. With one of the top defenses in the league accompanying Jackson’s offense, this Ravens team should compete with the Patriots for the AFC bid to the Super Bowl.

3.San Francisco 49ers (8-0)

I know that they are the only remaining undefeated team in the NFL, but they have only played two teams that have a winning record, so that’s why they are not #1. Emmanuel Sanders has been a near perfect fit in his short time with the 49ers, and the running game headlined by Matt Breida and Tevin Coleman is as good as any in the league. Combine that with a defense led by rookie Nick Bosa and future HOFer Richard Sherman, it’s no mystery as to why this team has been successful. However, most of these games have been against weak teams, so their Monday night clash with the Seahawks in week 10 should give us a true indication of just how good this team is.

2.New England Patriots (8-1)

The Patriots defense looks to be one of the best ever despite allowing 37 points to the Ravens, as they had only allowed 61 total points combined in the first eight games, and forced 27 turnovers this season in addition to 32 sacks. If they can get back on track the rest of the season, they will be very difficult to beat, especially with Tom Brady and Julian Edelman playing at a high level on the offensive side of the ball. With matchups against the Cowboys, Texans, Bills, and Chiefs looming, we will get a clear chance to see if this is yet another dominant Tom Brady-Bill Belichick Patriots team, or if this team has only been dominant because most of their schedule has been weak. I will go with the former myself, as I think this team is primed for a record-breaking 7th Super Bowl win.

1.New Orleans Saints (7-1)

The undefeated record that this team had while Teddy Bridgewater was starting was unprecedented, truly showing just how incredible this Saints squad is. Michael Thomas is the best receiver in the NFL right now, Alvin Kamara is a top 10 RB, and the run defense is one of the top in the league. Also considering that this team has an elite offensive line and a healthy Drew Brees back from his injury, this team is undoubtedly the favorite to win the whole thing, and I expect them to go very deep into the postseason and maybe win the 2nd Super Bowl in franchise history. The NFC is stacked, so the road will be tough, but this team is more than capable of winning the whole thing.

HOW TO STAY SAFE THIS HALLOWEEN http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/6331/feature/how-to-stay-safe-this-halloween/ http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/6331/feature/how-to-stay-safe-this-halloween/#respond Tue, 05 Nov 2019 20:21:51 +0000 http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/?p=6331   Everybody loves Halloween. You either hand out candy or you get to go door-to-door getting yummy deliciousness. But whichever way you celebrate, there are always going to be the dangers of Halloween. That’s why there are a few simple rules everybody should follow.

The first thing you should do is NEVER go trick-or-treating by yourself. This is the perfect time for predators to prey on little kids that are by themselves. Actually, any teenage kid is also good prey in the predator’s eyes.  The second thing is you have to pick good groups to go with. Whether it’s a Halloween party, trick-or-treating, or over to someone’s house, always go in a group. Don’t pick a group that you know will let you wander off, or leave you by yourself. Pick people you know who will make sure you don’t do something stupid, or make sure there is someone with you at all times. Make sure that when you go up to a door to get candy, go with a buddy or two. If you go by yourself, then you look vulnerable and weak. That leads us to number three: pick good streets. Don’t go down that creepy alley that you know looks weird even when it’s light outside. Pick streets that have a lot of lights and a lot of people. The more people and the lighter it is, then most likely nothing will happen to you. Some kids feel like they are too old for Halloween,  so they stay home and hand out candy. Unfortunately, this can also be dangerous. If somebody knows that you are home alone, then they may see that as an opportunity. So make sure that you know who is outside your door, or maybe leave candy outside in a bowl. Another trick that works for Halloween is keeping lights on whether or not you stay home. Make it look like there are people in the house, so your house is less likely to be robbed or less likely someone will try to get to you.

I know this seems like a lot of things that you may feel too old to listen to, but these may help you in ways that you didn’t even think of. This may actually help one of your friends or younger siblings. People don’t like to think of the possibilities of something bad happening, but it happens more than we know about. So stay safe this Halloween Owls!

HARVICK WINS AAA TEXAS 500 FOR THIRD YEAR IN A ROW http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/6337/showcase/harvick-wins-aaa-texas-500-for-third-year-in-a-row/ http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/6337/showcase/harvick-wins-aaa-texas-500-for-third-year-in-a-row/#respond Tue, 05 Nov 2019 20:11:47 +0000 http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/?p=6337 Kevin Harvick overcame a pit-road penalty to win his third consecutive AAA Texas 500 and punch his ticket to the Championship 4 at Homestead. Harvick led a race high 119 laps en route to his fourth win of the year, and 49th of his career, tying him with team owner Tony Stewart for 14th all-time on the win list. “Texas has always been so great to us, and what a race track the last few years,” Harvick said. “It’s just been a lot of work put into this race. We knew this was a good race track for us. Felt like it fit the styles of our cars, and, man, did it.” (Courtesy of nascar.com) It was Harvick’s first win in the 2019 playoffs, and his first top 5 since Dover four weeks ago. With ISM Raceway looming next, a track Harvick has won at 9 times in his career, he can approach that race with nothing to lose, as he knows he’ll have the opportunity to win the title in the next race at Homestead-Miami. His SHR teammates all ran well too, as all four SHR drivers led 25+ laps, and Aric Almirola and Daniel Suarez finished second and third, respectively. Almirola led 62 laps and Suarez led 25. Teammate Clint Bowyer also led a fair amount of laps, as he paced the field early for 36 laps. “That was a very solid night, and I’m very happy with the performance and speed that we brought from the shop,” said Suarez, who matched the third-place finish he posted at Texas in the spring. “Everyone back at the shop did a great job. We knew we would be fast here. We had a solid performance here last time. We did a good job. We had good execution and a good clean day. I’m very happy for Stewart-Haas Racing and the 41 Ford Mustang was pretty sporty. I am very happy for Kevin getting his ticket for Homestead.” (Courtesy of nascar.com)

Playoff drivers Chase Elliott and Denny Hamlin suffered major mishaps in the first stage of Sunday’s race, making their quests for a title much more challenging. Elliott’s car got loose on the exit of turn 2 on lap 9 and hit the wall pretty hard, and Hamlin spun through the frontstretch grass on lap 80. For Elliott, the only mathematical way for him to advance to the Championship 4 is by virtue of a win in Sunday’s penultimate race at ISM Raceway. “I made a mistake, got loose and crashed. I really hate that happened,” Elliott said. “Obviously, it’s not good and not what you’re looking for. It’s just my mistake and there’s really no excuse for it. It’s just all eyes on Phoenix.” (Courtesy of nascar.com) Unfortunately for Hamlin, his car dug in to the frontstretch grass after his spin coming off of turn 4, causing significant damage. However, he was able to finish the race 28th, 6 laps down. “Just lost control. That’s all there is to it,” Hamlin said. “But proud of the whole FedEx team for putting their best effort to get this running with decent speed there at the end. Did the best we could and we’ll go to Phoenix and try to win.” (Courtesy of nascar.com) Hamlin is 20 points below the cutoff line, so while it will be near impossible to qualify on points without Kyle Busch or Joey Logano suffering a major mishap, he could still do it by earning a lot of stage points and a good finish. However, barring anything crazy, he will most likely have to win to advance. “The car and effort will be there, that’s for sure,” Hamlin said. “There’s no doubt in my mind we can go there and win. Especially in these circumstances, I like the challenge. So we’re going go out there and give it our best shot and put our best foot forward and see if we can’t get a win next week.” (Courtesy of nascar.com)

The penultimate race for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series will be at Phoenix’s ISM Raceway on Sunday, as the eight driver playoff field will be cut in half for the season finale in Miami. With the large margin at the cutoff, drivers will be willing to make some crazy moves to win their way into the next round. Tune in to NBC on Sunday at 1:30 CT to catch all of the action.

Here are the playoff standings:

WINTER TRAVEL SAFETY http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/6317/uncategorized/winter-travel-safety/ http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/6317/uncategorized/winter-travel-safety/#respond Fri, 01 Nov 2019 14:14:34 +0000 http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/?p=6317 Here in Texas our seasons and weather never conform to the norm. Usually, November through February are considered to be the cold months. But we are often too excited about getting away on vacation to worry about packing safety equipment or preparing for long road trips. Below are some things that you can do to ensure the safety of you and your family on those much-deserved vacation’s this winter.

The number one thing you should always do, before you even leave your home, is to let someone know where you are going, when you will be leaving, and how long you anticipate it taking you to get there. You can take it one step further and give them a copy of your itinerary, especially if you are traveling out of state or out of the country. If you plan on doing most of your traveling by car, it is essential that you check your spare tire to make sure that it is not flat. Even though you may have never used your spare tire, it does lose air over time. There’s nothing worse than putting all that work into changing a flat tire to find that the spare is also flat.

Next, check the weather forecast. Depending on your destination, you may run into snow, ice, or even a blizzard. You may want to adjust your travel plans depending on any bad weather in your path. And lastly, pack extra clothes and snacks. If you find yourself stranded on the side of the highway during a blizzard or impassable roads, you need to have extra clothes and food available. Extra socks to keep your feet dry, extra sweaters or coats to keep your body dry and warm. Pack extra snacks and water in case you are stuck in your car while waiting for help to arrive. Many people think that when they are being rescued during a bad winter storm that help should arrive in a short amount of time. Many times, that is not the case. You could wait for many hours before rescuers can get to you and get you to safety. Most importantly, know your location. If you’re not familiar with the area, use Google Maps to see where you are.

WHY YOU SHOULD DO BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/6299/opinion/why-you-should-do-brazilian-jiu-jitsu/ http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/6299/opinion/why-you-should-do-brazilian-jiu-jitsu/#respond Tue, 29 Oct 2019 13:37:45 +0000 http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/?p=6299 “Jiu-Jitsu puts you completely in the moment, where you must have a complete focus on finding a solution to the problem. This trains the mind to build that focus, to increase your awareness, and your capacity to solve problems,’’ says Rickson Gracie, a member of the family who originally formed the style of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. For those who don’t know what Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is, it is a form of martial arts focused on grappling and ground techniques. Sharpen Iron Academy, a school that teaches martial arts, says, “It promotes the concept that smaller and weaker people can successfully defend themselves against bigger, and stronger attackers”. It is beneficial for everyone to know self-defense, and therefore Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a great way to learn due to the multiple positive outcomes regarding confidence and technicalities.

Learning techniques from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu provides development of “functional strength, cardiovascular endurance, and flexibility” according to Sharpen Iron. Apart from strengthening physical capabilities, BJJ improves mental focus, as individuals must provide focus on the details of the techniques. As claimed by the academy, “Successful techniques stimulate longer focus.” The skills learned throughout training involve strength in several different forms.

Not only do the techniques taught in Jiu-Jitsu provide the self-defense an individual needs to protect themselves, but also the confidence that is beneficial when standing up for yourself and in life in general. Sharpen Iron proudly states, “BJJ gives a child real confidence as they advance in ways to defend themselves… We teach mutual respect, and the confidence and leadership to defend those that cannot defend themselves”.

Besides confidence and self-defense, Jiu-Jitsu can be for anyone. Whether you’re shy or outgoing, the social environment on the mat is outstanding! You get to make new friends and meet new people from different cultures. “The staff and students in a martial arts gym are like a family, there’s nothing else like it,” says Orlando, student of Sharpen Iron. “… it’s more fun to work out with your friends!” Sharpen Iron beams.

GIRLS NOW BEING ACCEPTED INTO BOY SCOUTS http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/6271/news/girls-now-being-accepted-into-boy-scouts/ http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/6271/news/girls-now-being-accepted-into-boy-scouts/#respond Tue, 29 Oct 2019 13:26:27 +0000 http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/?p=6271 For years, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts have been separated and different. It was only in 2017 did The Boy Scouts of America, BSA, begin to allow girls to join Cub Scouts, from Kindergarten to fifth grade.

Two years later, on February 1st, 2019, an announcement was made that BSA would be accepting girls into the organization’s older youth program, Boy Scouts. BSA even plans on creating the dream of becoming an Eagle Scout for girls in 2020, a reality.

During that time, BSA announced that they would be altering the name of their Boy Scouts organization. It is now known as Scouts BSA, a change made as girls would soon be joining the program.

All these groundbreaking announcements haven’t been met with open arms by everyone though. Upon the official statement being released, The Girl Scouts of America released a statement regarding that the “benefit of the single-gender environment has been well-documented by educators, scholars, other girl-and youth-serving organizations, and Girl Scouts and their families.” BuzzFeed News had obtained a letter reportedly from the GSUSA president who accused BSA of welcoming girls to help their diminished enrollment numbers.

Regardless, there have been very few numbers of girls following through with the enrollment into the program, most female-troops in Scouts BSA have a single female, resulting in that female being classified as a lone-scout until more can join the troop. In comparison, several have been joining Cub Scouts and soon, some will be ranking up to Scouts BSA if they so choose.

For a program that had only involved groups of boys for more than a century, deciding to include girls has opened a variety of doors and opportunities for these teens that some might not have had elsewhere.

Some teams suffered major losses, whether it was by the score or a major injury, and other teams earned huge win that could reverse their fortunes right as the playoff picture is becoming a bit clearer. Here are the storylines from week 7.

In the midst of a tornado outbreak in Dallas, the Dallas Cowboys were like a tornado of their own, as they destroyed the Philadelphia Eagles 37-10 in a huge win, as it ended a three game losing streak. Ezekiel Elliott returned to his normal form from the past 3 seasons, as he had 22 carries for 111 yards, and 6 receptions for 36 yards. Elliott established his dominance early with a 14 yard touchdown run(which was overturned as his knee was down at the 1), but his destruction of the Eagles secondary on that play set the tone. “That’s how I play every week,” Elliott said. “I like to think of the defense as a shield. In the first quarter, you hit them a couple times, you dent the shield a little bit. You keep on hitting it.” (Courtesy of espn.com) It was also a record setting day for two Cowboys, as Dak Prescott broke Roger Staubach’s franchise record for the most rushing touchdowns by a QB in Cowboys history, and Brett Maher became the first kicker to make 3 60+ yard field goals in NFL History with a 63 yard field goal to end the first half. However, the game wasn’t 100% perfect for Dallas, as star defenders Leighton Vander Esch and Robert Quinn both missed the entire second half. Fortunately, the defense stepped up and only allowed 3 second half points without them, and both players should be back after the week 8 BYE for a pivotal matchup against the New York Giants in week 9.

In addition to Vander Esch and Quinn, multiple other superstars suffered injuries, including Patrick Mahomes, Adam Thielen, Matt Ryan, and Kerryon Johnson. Johnson was placed on IR, so Ty Johnson and JD McKissic will handle running back duties for a Detroit team that is already centered around passing the ball. For Mahomes, he should miss a maximum of 3 weeks after the MRI on his knee which he suffered a dislocated kneecap came back. In fact, he may be back as soon as Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers. Until he is back, though, Matt Moore will handle the starting quarterback duties. Cowboys defenders Quinn and Vander Esch should be back after the week 8 bye, but if they are not, Justin March Lillard and Kerry Hyder should see increased snaps, as well as Dorance Armstrong once he is healthy. Adam Thielen suffered a hamstring injury in Sunday’s game against Detroit, and is officially out for Thursday night’s matchup against the Washington Redskins. Finally, Matt Ryan’s injury could be an issue for the 1-6 Falcons, as he is questionable for Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks. Unfortunately, he was a non-participant in Wednesday’s practice, so there is a good chance he doesn’t play on Sunday.

The Los Angeles Chargers continue to confuse the whole NFL after Sunday’s 23-20 loss to the Titans, bringing them down to 2-5 after two unexpected losses in a row, despite all of the talent on their roster. However, this loss was controversial, as two late go-ahead touchdowns by the Chargers were overturned. Ultimately, the Chargers needed to get one yard to win the game, and Melvin Gordon fumbled the ball on the play with only 15 seconds left, which was recovered by Tennessee’s Jurrell Casey. “You don’t get 1 yard, you don’t deserve to win the damn game, and that’s the way it is,” Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said. “We had 1 yard to win this game, and we let it slip out of our hands.” (Courtesy of espn.com) With players like Phillip Rivers, Hunter Henry, Keenan Allen, Austin Ekeler,, and Joey Bosa, as well as many others, it’s a mystery as to why the Chargers struggle to win games. Their home games are not home games at all, as most of the fans are rooting for the opposing team, as evidenced best in their loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The lack of fan support is certainly a factor, but lack of execution seems to be the main issue, as evidenced in their loss to Tennessee. The common factor in all of these years, however, has been the inconsistency of Phillip Rivers as the quarterback, so it’s certainly possible that he is the problem. One thing for sure, though, is that the Chargers certainly wish they had kept Drew Brees instead of Rivers. Ultimately, though, some major decisions need to be made immediately (AKA trading Melvin Gordon :)) to build a team that can win games now, and they need to consider drafting a younger quarterback who is more consistent.

ANOTHER ROYAL WEDDING http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/6277/news/another-royal-wedding/ http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/6277/news/another-royal-wedding/#respond Thu, 17 Oct 2019 00:44:49 +0000 http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/?p=6277 Yet another royal wedding is to come! On September 26, 2019, the Buckingham Palace announced Princess Beatrice of York’s engagement to property tycoon Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. The two made their first public appearance together at the Portrait Gala in London’s National Portrait Gallery in March of this year, and are said to have been dating since the Fall of last year. They became engaged in Italy while on vacation and are planning a wedding in 2020.

Mozzi is the Chief Executive officer (CEO) of the architecture and design studio, Banda. He has one son, Wolfie, from a previous relationship, and is the royal family’s first American–a mixed-race stepchild. Princess Beatrice also had a previous long-term relationship, however, that ended in 2016. Beatrice and Edoardo have known each other for a very long time, and both of their families were elated to see them marry. “Edo and Beatrice are made for each other, and their happiness and love is there for all to see,” said Mozzi’s parents. The princess’s sister Eugenie Ferguson agreed. “Beabea- wow! I’m so happy for you my dearest big sissy and dear Edo. It’s been a long time coming and you two are meant to be,” she tweeted shortly after the announcement. Beatrice’s parents have also commented on the occasion; “We are the lucky parents of a wonderful daughter who has found her love and companion in a completely devoted friend and loyal young man. We send them every good wish for a wonderful family future,” the Duke and Duchess of York said.

The exact date of the wedding is still currently unknown, but be looking for lots of news and headlines next year as Princess Beatrice becomes a new bride and step-mom!

BLANEY WINS IN PHOTO FINISH AT TALLADEGA http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/6268/sports/blaney-wins-in-photo-finish-at-talladega/ http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/6268/sports/blaney-wins-in-photo-finish-at-talladega/#respond Wed, 16 Oct 2019 15:32:15 +0000 http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/?p=6268 Ryan Blaney was able to beat Ryan Newman in a historically close finish in Monday’s 1000Bulbs.com 500, as the race was delayed to Monday after it started raining after stage 1 on Sunday. Blaney made a move to the inside exiting the tri-oval with a push from Aric Almirola and was able to barely beat Ryan Newman to the start/finish to punch his ticket to the round of 8. Blaney beat Newman by only 0.007 of a second, the sixth closest finish in Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series history, and the closest since the 2011 thriller at Talladega. Blaney had to overcome some early adversity, as he spun coming to pit road on lap 34 after locking up his brakes, but he was able to overcome it. “Yeah, it was an amazing effort the last two days, to be honest with you,” said Blaney. “We spun out early yesterday and missed some big ones today. We were able to weave our way through. I can’t thank Aric Almirola enough for helping me out there at the end.” (Courtesy of nascar.com) Blaney was the leader on the final restart with just two laps to go after a major crash on the backstretch with 7 laps to go(more on that later), and Newman got by him on the backstretch on the final lap with a push from Denny Hamlin. Of course, it didn’t matter, as Blaney got the spot right back right before the start/finish line. “That big push that Newman and the 11 (Denny Hamlin) got, I knew I wasn’t going to be able to block it,” Blaney said. “They were coming so fast and they wanted to split me. I wanted to stay to the bottom and kind of pulled the 11 off the 6 and then had a big enough run to get to the 6.”(Courtesy of nascar.com) For Newman, it was a great opportunity to get his first win since 2017, and his first in the No. 6 car, but he fell just short. “We just came up that little bit short,” Newman said. “I don’t know what else to say. I could have pinched him some more. I probably could have taken the air. You can go back and bench-race that three weeks from now. It was good racing to the end.” (Courtesy of nascar.com)

A huge pileup on lap 182 involved 11 cars, including Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, and Brad Keselowski. Harvick and Busch were both able to limp to the finish, while Keselowksi’s day came to an end. Kyle Busch’s car was turned in front of the field and clipped Brendan Gaughan’s #62 car and sent him airborne, and his car did a full flip before landing back on its wheels. Gaughan was pretty lighthearted about the accident, however. “I stuck the landing. The Russian judge docked me a little bit, I didn’t keep it straight,” Gaughan joked. After watching the replay once more, Gaughan admitted, “Let’s see, legs together, ahhh, didn’t really stick it (the landing) well.” (Courtesy of sportingnews.com) Gaughan had just been pushed to the lead by Keselowski right as Busch was turned, putting an unfortunate end to what could’ve been an incredible day, as Gaughan only runs four races a year, and has never won a Cup Series race. I was having a great time, we were up front,” said Gaughan. “I show up, what, four times a year and people think I’m crazy for loving this racing, but I love racing at Daytona and Talladega. I enjoy the crap out of this. When I come with the Beard family and the Chevrolet that they give me with that ECR engine that Richard (Childress) gives me and a little bit of help, we come to be here for the win. We had a chance to win. That’s all I can ask for.” (Courtesy of yahoo.com)

There were two other major accidents that had huge playoff implications, as a lap 107 accident took out Alex Bowman and damaged the cars of Martin Truex Jr., Brad Keselowski, and Kevin Harvick. Kyle Larson was also eliminated, but it didn’t hurt his playoff situation, as he is automatically advancing to the round of 8 by virtue of his win at Dover. Another crash on lap 162 wiped out William Byron and significantly damaged the #22 of Joey Logano, but Logano was able to continue and amazingly finished 11th. Clint Bowyer also had an accident on lap 153 that put him 3 laps down. With this weekend’s elimination race at Kansas looming, some drivers will have to make some desparation moves and get a little lucky to advance.

Here are the playoff standings:

Driver Points                                +/- cutoff
1. Kyle Larson                               ADVANCED
2. Ryan Blaney                              ADVANCED

UPDATE IN GAMING http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/6264/entertainment/update-in-gaming/ http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/6264/entertainment/update-in-gaming/#respond Fri, 11 Oct 2019 17:30:37 +0000 http://ihoot.iuniversityprep.org/?p=6264 Gaming has been on the rise for quite some time now, and September was a pretty good time. With the release of Madden 20 and NBA2K20, which are NFL and NBA simulators, new doors have opened up for new stories and better graphics. I have played both, and while still holding the mechanics and charm of both series, I can’t help but feel that EA games have gotten worse. Its entirely possible that I am just exhausted by the series, so they are definitely games you should try for yourself if you enjoy sports and a decent storyline!

Fortnite’s meteoric rise has made it hard to find someone who isn’t talking about it. Fortnite is a cartoony battle royale that kids and adults of all ages can enjoy. With updates every week and a constant flow of content, Fortnite has stomped the competition of all other battle royale games into the ground. Fornite’s growth in the competitive field is causing some problems though. While Fortnite is a competitive game, with 250 million users, there are bound to be people just playing casually. There is a constant battle between the “casuals” and the “competitives” and Fortnite is stuck in the middle. There is always something to complain about and I feel Fortnite’s reign will soon end if they don’t find a solution
Overall, I feel we have been running low on good games. I can’t play Fortnite forever! Hopefully this month with the release of Borderlands 3 and Modern Warfare, the gaming community will feel whole again.
